On 10 January 2017, the European Commission presented a proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on privacy and the protection of personal data in electronic communications and repealing Directive 2002/58 / EC (Regulation on privacy and electronic communications).
The proposed measures are divided into several aspects:
Modification and updating of the rules regarding the confidentiality of the content, similar to those from the telecommunications;
Introduce strict rules against the use of spam.
It is envisaged that national data protection authorities will be responsible for the application of the confidentiality rules in the Regulation.
